Sierra Nevada Eye Center — Comprehensive Eye Exams

Prevention Starts
With
a Good Look.

Many eye diseases develop without symptoms until permanent damage has occurred. A comprehensive exam is the best tool we have to catch problems early.

  • OCT imaging available for detailed eye health screening
  • First ophthalmic practice in Northern Nevada with electronic medical records
  • Comprehensive care for the whole family, all ages

Am I a Candidate for Comprehensive Eye Exams?

A comprehensive exam checks more than your prescription. Here's who should schedule one.
Overdue for a Checkup
Most adults should have a comprehensive exam every one to two years.
New Vision Changes
Blurry vision, eye strain, or headaches deserve a closer look.
Diabetes or High Blood Pressure
Systemic conditions can show up first as changes in the eye.
Family History
Glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other conditions can run in families.

Already wear glasses or contacts? Routine exams still matter. They can catch cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal disease even if your prescription hasn’t changed.

How often is enough? Most adults benefit from an exam every one to two years. Anyone with diabetes, glaucoma, or another eye condition may need more frequent visits.

What Happens During a Comprehensive Eye Exam

A comprehensive eye exam goes well beyond checking your glasses prescription. At Sierra Nevada Eye Center, our exams combine vision testing with a detailed look at the structures inside your eye, using advanced diagnostic technology, including optical coherence tomography (OCT), to detect and manage eye health concerns with precision.

Regular exams matter because a number of serious eye conditions, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and cataracts, can develop well before you notice any change in your vision. By the time symptoms appear, some of these conditions have already caused permanent damage. Catching them early, through a routine exam, gives us the best chance to protect your long-term vision.

During your visit, we’ll test your visual acuity, check your eye pressure, and in most cases dilate your pupils for a clear view of the retina and optic nerve. OCT imaging adds a detailed, cross-sectional view of the retina that can reveal changes invisible to the naked eye. If you wear contact lenses, please remove them three days before your appointment so we can get an accurate reading of your cornea.

As the first ophthalmic practice in Northern Nevada to implement electronic medical records, we’re able to track subtle changes in your eye health over time, comparing exam to exam rather than relying on a single snapshot. If we find something that needs attention, whether that’s a cataract, early glaucoma, or a retinal change, we’ll walk you through what it means and what comes next.

Routine vs. Comprehensive Medical Exams

Not every visit needs the same depth of testing. Here's how the two differ.

Routine Vision Exam

  • Basic vision and eye pressure screening
  • Recommended every one to two years for most adults
  • Good fit for patients without known eye conditions
Prescription Check

Comprehensive Medical Eye Exam

A deeper look at your overall eye health

  • Dilated exam of the retina and optic nerve
  • OCT imaging for detailed structural screening
  • Glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy screening
  • Recommended for anyone with diabetes, glaucoma, or a family history of eye disease

Expected Comprehensive Eye Exams Outcomes & Recovery

A comprehensive exam is quick, low-risk, and often catches problems long before they'd otherwise be noticed.
Early Detection
Many eye diseases have no early symptoms. A comprehensive exam can catch them before damage occurs.
Whole-Health Insight
Your eyes can reveal early signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, and other conditions.
Same-Day Results
Findings are reviewed with you before you leave, with clear next steps if needed.
Care for All Ages
From children to older adults, our team provides exams tailored to every stage of life.

What Patients Can Expect in the First 30 Days

  • Dilation causes temporary light sensitivity and blurred near vision
  • Bring sunglasses for the drive home if your pupils are dilated
  • Most exams are completed within an hour
  • Results and any next steps are reviewed the same day
  • No downtime or recovery needed afterward
  • Follow-up interval is set based on your individual risk factors

Safety & Risk Considerations

A comprehensive eye exam is one of the lowest-risk visits in medicine. The only temporary side effect for most patients is dilation.

Safety Profile

  • Non-invasive and painless for the vast majority of patients
  • Dilation causes only temporary light sensitivity and blurred near vision
  • No recovery time needed
  • Safe for patients of all ages, including children

Possible Side Effects

  • Temporary Light Sensitivity - from dilation, typically resolving within a few hours.
  • Blurred Near Vision - also from dilation, making reading difficult until it wears off.
